Food solidarity and access to food for all is something many CSAs and small-scale farms aspire to address. However, it’s often hard to balance these issues against the competing demand of earning a decent income from farming.

Elske Hageraats of Ommuurde Tuin, a 1-hectare CSA in the Netherlands with 90 shares per week, set out to find a balance between food access, solidarity and a fair income. She realised that like many other peasant farmers in the Netherlands she was earning half the minimum wage. After talking to other farmers across Europe, Ommuurde Tuin adopted a new share model which they called “solidarity payment.” It’s where you sell your time instead of your product and it’s been a huge success. Wages and awareness have increased, and food is accessible.
