CSA Network UK Open Day - 1 October


Our CSA Network UK Open Day is an opportunity for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) schemes across the country to open their doors to the general public and raise awareness about what CSA is all about. Here are some of the events that took place in 2016.

Banc Organics

Bosavern Community Farm

Date: Sunday 2 October 1-4pm

Details: Join us for farm tours, cake and soup, crafts and games as part of the CSA Network UK open weekend. You can also get involved with planting and sowing in our Grow Wild bee garden. Or just come and pick blackberries from our bursting hedges! 1 – 4 pm free and open to all.

Brighton CSA – Fork and Dig It

Date: Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October

Details: Open for site tours. Come up and visit our beautiful site and learn about your local organic community supported agriculture scheme. Refreshments available. Saturday 12-2pm – tea,coffee,cake and cordial. Sunday 2-6pm – clay-baked pizza, freshly-picked salad, fruit cordial

Caerhys Organic Community Agriculture

Date: Sunday 2 October 2016 2pm

Details: Come and relax with good company and good food at the farm. A COCA communal Sunday Lunch/ Harvest Feast to celebrate the year, the veggies, and the people that together make COCA what it is. Bring food and drink to share, and please bring your own plates and cutlery. We will have an apple press there, and hopefully a BBQ or giant wok going as well to cook on/with. In the new Straw Bale building at the farm Children and friends welcome.

Cae Tan CSA

Details: Cae Tan CSA is in its second year of production. We now have over 90 member households making us the largest CSA in Wales. We will be holding our first AGM on the evening of 1st October 2016.

This evening will focus on raising awareness of what CSA is & how members can become more involved. We will be showing a short film & various members & volunteers will present different aspects of the project for group discussion.

Camel Community Supported Agriculture

Details: FlintShare CSA is hosting a Cilcain Community Cafe at Cilcain Village Hall. An afternoon of tea and homemade cake; homemade jams and preserves; sale of fruit and veg; children’s activities; a raffle; bric a brac and craft stalls. All accompanied by live music by ‘Alchemist’. FoodSmiles St Albans

Date: Saturday 1 October 2016 1 – 5 pm

Details: Volunteer/Open Day. At FoodSmiles our members grow organic veg together, sharing skills and learning about growing, and share the harvest once a week. Come along for a free tour of our little farm, or bring your gardening gloves and volunteer for the afternoon as we sow and plant crops for the winter. Refreshments provided, including a selection of cakes made with vegetables!

Hempsals Community Farm

Date: Saturday 1 October 2016

Details: Open Day at Hempsals Community Farm. We’ll be running our regular Saturday morning work session, 9am-1pm. Everyone is welcome to come and see what goes on at the farm and lend a hand. We’ll be milking goats, feeding animals and harvesting our potatoes using vintage machinery (weather permitting)! There will be plenty of opportunity to meet our animals and all who come will receive a box of fruit freshly picked from our orchard.Tea and cake will be served as always around 11am.

ICS Forestry

Date: Sunday 2 October 2016 11 – 4pm

Details: Please come and see what we are about. A scheme that allows members to take home produce from the woods (timber, vegetables, meat) and to spend time in a wood that they can treat as their own, in exchange for voluntary work.  Some produce may be available. Ticketed event but tickets can be purchased at the gate… free, but we need to know numbers for our risk assessments. Activities include campfire, walking around the gardens and the woods. Please bring a picnic. Hot water can be provided for drinks if people bring coffee/tea etc. Park on the verges outside of the wood and walk in. No more dogs allowed…the quota for dogs on leads has been reached.

Plotgate CSA

Date: Saturday 1 October 2016

Details: As part of the national CSA Network open days, Plotgate CSA will be opening our gates.  Please feel free to drop in/ out of any of the activities below…10-12am Volunteer Work Task- harvesting the squashes. Come and lend a hand bringing in the squashes from the field to the greenhouse. 11am- Farm Tour 1 – A guided tour around the site and an opportunity to see our progress and chat with producers. 1pm – Lunch A light lunch will be provided from our fantastic veggies. 2pm – Farm Tour 2 – A second opportunity to join a guided tour.  3pm-4pm Members’ Forum – We would love to take this opportunity to get current members together for a feedback session and general discussion about being part of a CSA. All day We are collecting windfall apples from local gardens and the pigs are enjoying them immensely!  Pig feeding will be a constant throughout the day.

The Community Farm

Date: Saturday 1 October 2016 11am – 3pm

Details: We’re planning a get-together on Saturday 1 October. Enjoy fantastic company and beautiful views, surrounded by the fruits (or vegetables) of our labour. This is will provide a great opportunity for you to meet current staff, volunteers and CSA members and find out all about The Community Farm.

We’ll be stoking up the barbecue and cob oven, and making pizza and salad using fresh crops from the field. Feel free to bring along some food for the barbecue and/or to share with others. Let’s make it a feast to remember! Join us in making a rather unusual scarecrow (which will form part of Harvey’s Scarecrow Trail). There’ll be a tour of the farm at 2pm.

The Community Farm is a community-owned social enterprise, growing and selling organic food through a box delivery service and involving the local community in all that we do. Our aim is to help people develop a better understanding of where their food comes from, reconnect with the land on which their food is grown, and learn more about sustainable farming.

Wild Roots

Details: Open from 11am till 8pm
We will be demonstrating horse drawn cultivation during the day (weather conditions dependent). Meet the animals.
Painting horse shoes gypsy style for children. Lots of games (farm style) for children and adults too. E.g Tug of war with a difference, Apple bobbing, match box challenge, creepy crawly hunt, and others. Tea, coffee, home made cakes, soup round the fire with locally baked bread.
