Scottish Gathering a great success
Date Published: 26th March 2020
About 20 growers from around Scotland made it to the Bowhouse on the Balcaskie Estate, Fife for a gathering on 22 February 2020. The day was organised by the CSA Network in partnership with the Landworkers’ Alliance.
We started with an informative session about designing seed production into a crop plan, led by Ellen Rignell of Trill Farm Market Garden, and Sinéad Fortune from the Gaia Foundation, before braving the wild weather for a tour of East Neuk Market Garden by Connie and Tom who are going into their second season of production. Some of us were also treated to an impromptu lunchtime tour of the Scotland the Bread mill at the Bowhouse where the heritage grain grown on the estate is milled in small batches and hand packed for sale.
There was a session about community supported agriculture in Scotland where we heard from Sam at Tomnah’a Market Garden, Rosy and David about Meadowsweet Organics, and Johnny and Lynsey from Taybank Growers Cooperative with a discussion about how to support the development of CSAs in Scotland.
We ended the day by doing some research and sharing our knowledge about working with pests.
We are planning a residential gathering for the weekend of 24th/25th October near Inverness – get it in your diaries.
