Gibside Community Farm CIC
Gibside Community Farm was established as a member co-operative Community Interest Company in 2013. Gibside National Trust have kindly supported us by allocating 3 large plots within the walled garden and have leased us a 13.5 acre (5.5ha) field on Fellside Rd near Burnopfield.
We focused first on the walled garden and have transformed a car park into fertile and fruitful vegetable plots. Now we have started growing in 4 plots (15m x 30m) on the field and have planted 43 apple trees to create a small orchard. We have refurbished a 60 year old Ferguson tractor, with the help of the Ferguson Club, and are starting to learn how to use it! We have a plan to develop as an agroforestry project, planting trees to support the horticulture. With the support of a grant from the Woodland Trust we will be able to plant a small wood as a shelter for the vegetables.
